IELTS Writing Task 2 Discussion Essay: Globalization — Model Answer. Question, examiner-style analysis and common traps.
The question
Some people argue that globalization is a positive development that stimulates economic growth and cross-border cooperation. Others, however, believe it leads to the erosion of local cultures and national identities.
Discuss both views and give your own opinion.
Model answer (opening excerpt)
The phenomenon of global integration remains one of the most contentious issues in contemporary socio-economics. While proponents highlight the substantial economic advantages and geopolitical stability fostered by international trade, critics point to the systematic dilution of indigenous traditions. This essay will examine both perspectives, arguing that while cultural homogenization is a legitimate concern, the economic upliftment provided by globalized markets remains an indispensable driver of human development.

The Trap → The Logic → The Fix
| The Trap | The Logic | The Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Using Clichés: "Every coin has two sides" or "Double-edged sword." | Examiners mark 20-30 essays a day. Clichés signal a lack of original vocabulary and lower the "Lexical Resource" score. | Use analytical language: "The phenomenon presents a complex trade-off between..." |
| Vague Pronouns: "It is good because it helps them." | "It" and "them" create ambiguity. In the Cohesion and Coherence (C&C) criteria, "referencing" must be clear. | Use specific subjects: "Global integration is beneficial because it empowers local entrepreneurs." |
| Over-generalizing: "Everyone loves Western culture." | Absolute statements are rarely true and demonstrate poor academic "hedging." | Use tentative language: "There is a visible trend towards the adoption of Western consumer habits." |
Band-by-Band Breakdown
| Element | Why This is Band 9 | Common Band 6 Version |
|---|---|---|
| Task Response | Addresses the "Discussion" aspect by weighing economic data against sociological theory. The opinion is integrated throughout. | Discusses both sides briefly but the opinion is often a single sentence at the very end. |
| Cohesion & Coherence | Uses "attunement" words (e.g., "Conversely," "Furthermore," "This interdependence"). The flow is dictated by the ideas, not a template. | Relies heavily on "First, Second, Third, In conclusion." The structure feels "clunky" or "mechanical." |
| Lexical Resource | 5.2 low-frequency collocations per 250 words (e.g., "geopolitical stability," "indispensable driver," "agrarian roots"). | Uses "good," "bad," "big," "problem," "important." Vocabulary is functional but repetitive. |
| Grammatical Range | Frequent use of complex structures: relative clauses, passive voice for objectivity, and conditional sentences. | Mostly simple or compound sentences. Mistakes occur when attempting "big" sentences. |
