The question

Some people believe that a university education is essential for a successful career, while others argue that practical experience and skills are more important. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Model answer (opening excerpt)

The question of whether a tertiary degree or frontline experience constitutes the primary driver of professional success remains a point of contention in the global labor market. While some argue that university credentials remain the definitive gatekeeper to high-status professions, others contend that the rapid obsolescence of theoretical knowledge makes practical skill-building more vital. This essay will examine both perspectives before concluding that while degrees offer foundational credibility, the contemporary economy increasingly prioritizes adaptable, hands-on competencies.

The Trap → The Logic → The Fix

The TrapThe LogicThe Fix
The Generalization Trap: "Everyone needs a degree to get a job."Examiners penalize over-generalization as it lacks nuance and academic rigor.Use Hedges: "In many regulated professions, a degree remains a non-negotiable prerequisite."
The Vocabulary "List" Trap: Using words like "moreover," "furthermore," and "in addition" at the start of every sentence.Mechanical use of linkers is a hallmark of Band 6. It feels forced and repetitive.Logical Flow: Use the internal logic of the sentence to link ideas (e.g., "This requirement stems from..." or "Beyond these technical skills...").
The "Both Sides" Trap: Writing a very long paragraph for one side and a short one for the other. This results in an unbalanced Task Response (Criterion 1).Mirror Structure: Ensure both body paragraphs have roughly the same number of sentences (5-7) and similar depth.
