IELTS Writing Task 2 Discussion Essay: Urbanization — Model Answer. Question, examiner-style analysis and common traps.

By Ted Khercha · Ted.Talks.DZ · Updated 2026-10-26

The question

Some people prefer to live in a house in the countryside. Others think that cities are better places to live. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Model answer (opening excerpt)

The global demographic shift toward metropolitan centers has intensified the debate regarding the ideal living environment. While a significant cohort maintains that the tranquility and communal ties of rural life are indispensable, others argue that the economic and cultural infrastructure of urban centers offers a superior quality of life. This essay will examine both perspectives before arguing that while the countryside provides psychological respite, the city remains the primary engine for individual and professional development.

The Trap → The Logic → The Fix

The Trap: Many students attempt to use "sophisticated" words they found in a list, leading to "word salad" where the meaning is obscured. (e.g., "The urbanization is a deleterious phenomenon for the rustic folks.")

The Logic: Examiners do not reward "big words"; we reward precision. A Band 9 candidate chooses the word that fits the context most accurately. "Urban sprawl" is better than "big city growth" because it describes a specific type of horizontal expansion.

The Fix: Instead of memorizing synonyms, learn collocations.
